John the Baptist

John the Baptist is a saint and prophet of our Orthodox Religion. He was the son of the priest Zachariah and Elizabeth. Although his mother was unable to have children, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her and told her that she would have a son and name him John. Until the age of 30, he lived an ascetic life in the desert, with much prayer and spiritual fulfillment. At the age of 30, he lived in the desert of Judea, on the Jordan River, where he preached to the people and baptized them. It was he who baptized our Lord, hence the name John the Baptist, and it is said that as soon as he saw Him, he immediately understood who He was. His life and work annoyed the Pharisees, so Herod, despite his appreciation for him, imprisoned him. On one of his birthdays, Herod asked his daughter Salome to dance for him, and she could ask him for any reward. Unfortunately, her mother Herodias, who hated John, asked for "his head on a platter" and thus his beheading followed. We honor him every year on January 7th.
