Upwards to the Athonian desert, on a very steep slope of the mountain and on an altitude of 700 meters, lies the Skete of Saint Vasileios. The scenery is totally stimulating and the location of the Skete is absolutely captivating. The Skete is located between Katounakia and Kerasia, and in order to reach it one has to follow the steep pathway, which reveals the mysteries and the wealth of the Athonite nature. 200 meters above from the Skete, the little church of Profitis Elias stands out, just like a jewel on a crown.
Virtuous and famous ascetics in the history of Orthodoxy, most of them originated from Saint Vasileios homecountry, Kaisareia, passed their monastic living in the deserted place of Saint Vasileios Skete. Also, renowned persons of the Christian Orthodox Community, distinguished for their superior moderation and spirituality, lived in this location, such as: the Blessed Paisios Velitsofki, the Elder Joseph the Quiet, the Elder Herouvim and Vartholomaios.
Today, the monks who live in the Skete of Saint Vasileios are particularly well known for their talent in hagiography/iconography of Athonite technique. In a location, which inspires creativity and monastic way of living, the monks/iconographers create hagiographies/iconographies on an impressive background of pure golden leaves.
