In the area Ano Kapsala of Mount Athos, the renowned Cell of Saint George the Faneromenos stands out proudly. A Cell, which is reported as miraculous, such as in the story cited by Saint Paisios the Athonite in his book «Athonite Elders & Athonite Matters»; Saint Paisios refers to the fish, which were -against all odds- found at the feast held in honour of Saint George.
Regarding the name of the Holy Cell, it is referred that Saint George the Great Martyr was uncovered (the word «Faneromenos» in Greek means the one who is disclosed, who gets uncovered to the eyes of others) to the robbers who were going to rob the Cell. Besides, Saint George is being referred as «Faneromenos» already in the 14th century in the siggilum of the Emperor Manouel Palaiologus. However, according both to the written and the oral tradition, the disclose of Saint George took place in 1821, during the Greek Revolution, when he was uncovered to the robber Stamatis.
The spiritual offerings of the Cell were remarkably great, particularly during the years that Elders Eulogius, Pahomios and George lived in the Cell. After 1982, when Elder George was deceased, the Cell remained uninhabited for 20 years. However, despite of the hardships, the Cell recovered due to the efforts of Greeks and Greek Cypriots and its wealthy history was restored. The Cell produces incense, while CDs and books are being sold to support the construction works required, in order for the Cell to continue the spiritual offering.
